The Short Answer

CPI inflation was 3.5% in the 12 months to September 2026, which puts the estimated PIP rates from April 2027 at £79.40 and £118.60 a week for daily living and £31.35 and £82.80 for mobility. The ONS published the figure on 21 October 2026. September CPI has set every April rise since 2014. The DWP has not confirmed the 2027/28 rates, and payments do not change before April 2027. Nothing needs to be claimed.

What this means for your payments

  • Who is affected: everyone with a PIP award in payment in April 2027.
  • What changes to your money or your payment date: nothing yet. If the rates rise by 3.5%, both parts at the enhanced rate would pay an estimated £201.40 a week, up from £194.60. Payment dates do not change.
  • From when: April 2027, once the DWP confirms the 2027/28 rates.
  • What you need to do: nothing. The DWP applies uprating automatically to awards in payment.

What Changed

The Office for National Statistics published CPI inflation for September 2026 on 21 October 2026: prices rose by 3.5% in the 12 months to September 2026, up from 3.1% in the 12 months to August. This is the figure the April PIP rise has followed every year since 2014. For the April 2026 rise it was 3.8%, the CPI rate in the 12 months to September 2025.

Applying 3.5% to each 2026/27 rate and rounding to the nearest 5p gives the estimates below. The same calculation gives the exact published rate for every April from 2014/15 to 2026/27.

If the April 2027 rise matches CPI in the 12 months to September 2026, which was 3.5%, PIP would pay an estimated £79.40 or £118.60 a week for daily living and £31.35 or £82.80 a week for mobility in 2027/28. These are estimates, not confirmed rates.

Method: each 2026/27 weekly rate raised by 3.5% and rounded to the nearest 5p. The same calculation gives the exact published rate for every April from 2014/15 to 2026/27. The DWP sets the real 2027/28 rates, and the ONS September figure is a benchmark, not a rate. The Budget is on Wednesday 28 October 2026. Until April 2027 the 2026/27 rates apply.

Legal Status

The September CPI figure is an ONS statistic, not a PIP rate. Section 150 of the Social Security Administration Act 1992 requires the Secretary of State to review PIP rates in each tax year against the general level of prices. Where prices have risen, an up-rating order must raise the rates by at least that percentage. The Secretary of State decides how prices are measured.

The Secretary of State set out the 2026/27 rates in the written statement "Statutory Review of State Pension and Benefit Rates: 2026/27" on 26 November 2025. It stated that PIP would increase by 3.8%. There is no statement for 2027/28 yet, and GOV.UK carries no 2027 to 2028 rates paper.

What Has Not Changed

The 2026/27 rates stay in payment until April 2027. PIP pays £76.70 or £114.60 a week for daily living and £30.30 or £80.00 a week for mobility. Eligibility, the assessment, the points thresholds and the 4-weekly payment cycle are unaffected by uprating.
